Wattyl Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge

The Wattyl Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge is biggest
cycling event not only in the Lake Taupo region or New
Zealand, but in the Southern Hemisphere.
Event participant numbers have swelled to more
than 11,000. The cycling event's rapidly
growing popularity received an extra boost with
introduction of a relay category, allowing teams to
take on the event course in bite-size 40 km
sections.
The challange's solo cycle ride remains a driving force
for many event participants - about half the total
number of event entries completed the 160km course last
year. Then there were those who did 320km of enduro
riding and the "Super Crazies" who rode through the
night and most of the day to complete 500km of the
taupo event.
The Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge is held in Lake Taupo,
New Zealand on the last Saturday in November each year,

New Balance Great Lake
Relay - Lake Taupo Event next held: February
2007
This ultimate team relay event is designed for
runners and walkers from all walks of life, ages and
fitness levels. Great Lake Relay Participants include
corporate teams, group of friends, running and walking
organisations and families. Over 4,800 runners and
walkers participated in the last year's Great
Lake Relay . Relay competitors complete the 5.2 km to
10.1km legs in a relay around Lake Taupo, New Zealand.
The atmosphere is brilliant with parts of the event
rolling through the night. All teams return back to
Taupo Saturday afternoon. There is $100,000 in spot
prizes and give-aways to be won.
The New Balance Great Lake Relay is held in
Taupo, New Zealand in February each year; participants

Bonita Ironman New Zealand
Triathlon - Lake Taupo Event next
held: 3 March 2007
One of the biggest international sporting events held
each year in New Zealand and the ultimate in event
triathlons. The Bonita Ironman New Zealand combines a
3.8 km lake swim and a 179.2 km cycle with a full 42.2
km marathon. Starting at 7am in Taupo athletes begin
their challenge to complete the course by
midnight. The event course allows for spectators
to be as close as possible to the
swimming-cycling–running action. The first
Ironman event held in Taupo was in March 1999 with
over 700 competitors - last year over 1,200 took
part.
The Ironman New Zealand Triathlon event is held in
Taupo, New Zealand the first Saturday in March each
year; participants need to book their Taupo event

early as possible. No New Zealand Ironman competition

through magnificent countryside from one world famous
tourist destination to another. The event hosted 2300
competitors last year. The Rotorua to Taupo event
starts at Ward Street in Rotorua, New Zealand at 10am
and finishes at the Taupo Events Centre in Taupo.

Cat Eye Moon Ride - Lake Taupo
Event next held: 12 May 2007
The Moon Ride event in Taupo offers two awesome
mountain bike event options, twelve or twenty-four
hours, for event teams of 5 or solo riders. Both events
ride the 8km (30 minute) circuit which has been
designed to cater for all abilities. The Fletcher
Challenge Forest 24 Hour event operates from 10pm on
Friday, and the 12 Hour event starts at 10am on
Saturday. Both Cat Eye Moon Ride events finish at 10pm
Saturday. The event course is based at the
Whakarewarewa Forest at the MTB carpark adjacent to the
Waipa Sawmill. Travel 2km south of Rotorua - Taupo
Highway (SH5) turn left into Waipa Mill Road and the
carpark is 500m from this corner.

Tough Guy Challenge – Lake
Taupo Event next Held: August 2007
The Tough Guy Challenge event course is held over nine
kilometres in Rotorua New Zealand, just north of
Taupo and is based on an "Army type obstacle
course". You run, walk, push, crawl or climb through a
variety of natural and man made obstacles. These
include a waist high lake, swamp, open paddocks, native
bush or crawl under nets, climb over a climbing net
plus there is mud, mud and to finish some more mud. The
event course is world class and is sure to be lots and
lots of fun. The event is based at Off Road NZ - an
adrenaline pumping complex 15 minutes north of Rotorua
off SH5. Just follow the signs from SH5.

Levene Half
Marathon – Lake Taupo Event next
Held: August 2007
New Zealand's biggest half marathon event. now in its
tenth year. The Levene Half Marathon has an
almost even split between the numbers of event runners
and walkers. In last years Levene
half marathon event, over 3200 ran or walked the 21.1
km loop course starting on the Tongariro Domain next to
the Great Lake Centre & Taupo Visitor Information
Centre (i-site) on Tongariro Street travelling on a
flat scenic road along the lakefront of Lake Taupo
out to Mahuta Road at 5 Mile Bay and then back again to
the Tongariro Domain.
The Levene Half Marathon is traditionally held in Lake
Taupo, New Zealand on the first Sunday in August each
year; participants need to book their Taupo event
accommodation in
June-July as the Lake Taupo district's accommodation is
stretched to its limit over the marathon event weekend.

Crater to Lake Multi-Sport
Challenge – Lake Taupo Event next

The original Mount Ruapehu/Lake Taupo winter event
founded in 1992. A multi-discipline single-day event
involving snow skiing, mountain biking, road cycling,
kayaking, water skiing and running. 130
kilometres of adrenalin-pumping action for individuals,
social, corporate and secondary school teams. The
only known multi-sport event in the world which offers
snow skiing and water skiing on top of more traditional
triathlon disciplines.
The Crater to Lake course includes a 4.3km snow ski,
35.7km mountain bike ride, 34.5km road cycle, 16.6km
kayak, 31.5km water ski, and 11.5km run, with a

Jamis Bicycles Day-Night
Thriller – Lake Taupo Event next
held: October 2007
The Jamis Bicycles Day- Night "Thriller "
event is fast becoming one of the best New Zealand
events on the mountain bikers calendar and is the
largest mountain bike event of its kind in the world
with over 3,000 riders. The event's wide
appeal lies in the fact that it caters to all mountain
bikers, from recreational day riders to night riding
adrenaline junkies. The event ride is a five-person lap
race, or continuous relay event, operating for twelve
hours from 10.30am to 10.30pm. The Jamis Bicycles
Day- Night "Thriller " event allows only one team
member to ride on the event course at any one time and
the next rider must be tagged to commence their lap.
The event course is 8km or 30 minutes in length.
Registration is at the Taupo Events Centre on Spa road,
Taupo, New Zealand.

This long-course multisport event is held on the
spectacular Volcanic Plateau of the Central North
Island. 50km of road cycling, a stunning 26km mountain
run over Mount Tongariro and 23km of grade 2 white
water paddling on the mighty Tongariro River provides
for one of New Zealand 's great endurance events. It 's
